There’s Nothing Like Florence Shopping

Jan 11 , 2011

The Florence shopping scene is eclectic and beautiful. You’ll find new and well-known designers for clothing, jewelry, handcrafts, and Italian souvenirs.

If names like Gucci, Chanel, and Prada are music to your ears, then the Florence shopping scene will be the most beautiful symphony to you. In Florence, exquisite fashion design and the production of fine goods are not just a way for the citizens to earn a living, they are point of cultural pride. Whether it is handcrafts, antiques, jewelry, or clothing, Florence shopping caters to anyone in the market for beautiful, high quality, Italian goods. Shopping in Florence is a must for everyone from the bargain buyer to the aspiring designer.

When to go

Most shops in Florence are open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Dispersed throughout the city, these stores are as historically rich as the products they carry. Anytime is a good time to go shopping in Florence, however, certain markets are at their best on certain days, so make sure to ask a local salesperson when and where to go if you are looking for bargains.

Where to go

Any Florence shopping excursion should begin at one of the most recognizable landmarks in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge. The beautiful Ponte Vecchio spans the Arno River at its narrowest point and is the heart of the Florence shopping community. This “Old Bridge” will treat travelers to some of Italy’s best window shopping. Home to some of Florence’s finest jewelry shops, the Ponte Vecchio is a wonderful place to stroll and enjoy the beautiful view of the Arno while picking out a beautiful necklace or pair of fine earrings to go with the dress or jacket you are sure to buy from one of Florence’s fine artisan markets. While most shops in Florence are reputable, beware of black-market knockoffs and counterfeit goods around the Ponte Vecchio, as buying a counterfeit purse on the street can nab you a hefty fine!

Antiques

Antique hunters need look no further for hand made objects than Via Maggio, Via dei Fossi and Via Della Scala streets. The trained eye can find treasures within the famous antiquaries of these areas dating back to the 16th century. Visitors can spend days looking through the huge selections of chandeliers, paintings, and coins, just to name a few of the thousands of beautiful antiques Florence has to offer. For the true antique enthusiast visit the Piazza Santo Spirito on the second Sunday of every month, as antique dealers bring their finest selections to this monthly market.

Markets

Looking for an immersive Florence shopping experience? Dive into one of the many bustling open-air street markets that Florence is famous for. If you get lost in the maze that makes up the San Lorenzo Market on the Piazza di San Lorenzo, rest assured, as you are bound to come out with a great deal on some fine Italian leather or a unique souvenir.

Designer boutiques

If you’re in the market for an outfit to wear down the red carpet head straight to the most famous and luxurious Florence shopping area, Via de Tornabuoni Street. Florence has no shortage of fine clothing, and on Via de Tornabuoni you can browse all of the most famous Italian designers such as Ferragamo, Cavalli, Gucci, and Prada.

Outlet malls

Just outside of Florence is Via Europa 8 street, one of the best-kept Florence shopping secrets. “The Mall” is a one-of-a-kind outlet center that features many of Florence’s top fashion brands at a fraction of their regular price. While there may not be signs advertising this hidden treasure, it has become a go-to Florence shopping destination for anyone hoping to pick up designer clothing and products without the designer price.

Any dedicated shopper is going to be spellbound by what Florence has to offer. As the home and origin of many of Italy’s most famous brands and styles, Florence is guaranteed to keep fashion, antique, and art aficionados enthralled for a lifetime. Florence shopping is nothing short amazing and shouldn’t be missed if you’re looking to embark on a true Italian experience!
