Largely considered the most beautiful city in the world, historic Florence, or Firenze as it is called in Italian, continues to capture the imagination and envy of the world attracting millions of visitors throughout the year. Established on the banks of the Arno River, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Seas in the middle of the Italian peninsular, Florence has been at the center of arts, architecture and culture for many centuries. Founded by the Romans in the first century B.C.
Florence reached its pinnacle of success between the 11th and 15th centuries. The historic city center is a World Heritage Site showcasing some of the world's most valuable collections of art and architecture in world famous museums, restored palaces, magnificent churches and cathedrals and historic residences. Many Florence hotels are landmarks in their own right offering a glimpse into the life and times of the ancient city. Florence's influence has been felt in many spheres of modern life; from reinventing money in the form of the gold florin and pioneering the use of language to being the father of Renaissance architectural styles used throughout Europe, Florence's contribution to the world is magnificent.
At the forefront of science and technology, medicine and astronomy, many of the world's most famous names such as Galileo, Machiavelli, Bruni and the influential Medici family were born here or chose this city in which to live. All this and more is witnessed through an array of magnificent museums and art galleries with many of the world's most famous art and sculpture works on display. The Uffizi and Pitti Palace are perhaps the most well know with superb collections of Renaissance paintings and sculptures including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Brunelleschi and Donatello to mention but a few famous names.
The Accademia Gallery is the home of Michelangelo's "David" and the unfinished "Slaves" while the Bargello is home to a mind-blowing collection of sculptures. Other sites in Florence not to be missed include the Duomo, the iconic cathedral and city symbol with the magnificent renaissance engineering feat of Brunelleschi's huge dome. Picturesque views over the palaces, the Dome itself, the city's rooftops and Tuscan hills beyond is a site not to be missed from the adjacent Giotto's Tower. Take a stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, the most famous bridge over the Arno River that has been lined with shops, mostly jewelry since the powerful Medici family exerted its influence over the city.
Florence hotels represent Florentine culture through the ages with many located in the city center, within walking distance of major city attractions. From a 13th century residence, 16th, 17, and 18th century former palaces, villas and cloisters, the whispered political intrigue, romantic dalliances and family squabbles can still be heard within these hallowed walls. Decorated with the best of Tuscan style blending the grand and gracious illustrious past with modern amenities and facilities, Florence hotels cater for all budgets, tastes and styles.
Budget and mid-priced hotels are located just out of the center but are close to public transport still allowing easy access to the historic city hub. Offering breathtaking views over the city, luxury four and five-star Florence hotels include fresco painted ceilings, period fittings and furnishings combined with fabulous modern Italian creative design. Luxurious spas, meeting and conference centers and fitness facilities are world-class and great places to relax and unwind or entertain customers and visitors. Set in magnificent squares with tranquil inner courtyards and close to leafy parks and gardens guests can dine on sunny terraces or award winning Tuscan restaurants, sip chianti under shady trees and enjoy espresso coffee and biscotti dipped in Vin Santo in the hotel's lounge or pub.
